Fire Emblem Three Houses – Chapter 3 (Black Eagles)

白雲の章 White Clouds Chapter
花冠の節 Garland Moon
霧中の叛乱 Rebellion in the Mist

Just to clarify, all references to the Lord can be replaced with “the Goddess”, because the Lord of Fodlan is the Goddess.

Fire Emblem Three Houses – Chapter 1 (Black Eagles)

Based on a Reddit vote, I will be doing the Black Eagles route first.  I will hold another vote when the route splits again.

Summary of changes:

  • Lindhart’s mention of Japanese Keigo (honorific speech) was simplified.
  • Petra uses an expression with “fat bellies” that is hard to translate.
  • Dorothea has different responses for Male and Female Byleth.
  • Petra doesn’t understand that “arm” also means “ability” in Japanese.
  • Ferdinand gets to prattle on more about the responsibilities of the nobility.
  • Edelgard starts calling Byleth “師”, which she pronounces “Sensei” but means Master (in a master-apprentice relationship).
  • Hanneman is much less wordy.
  • Edelgard feels more arrogant in her dialogue overall.
  • Edelgard reveals she prefers her opposition to give minimal resistance.
  • Dimitri tells you not to overdo it, which is hilarious.
  • Dimitri is more clear that Dedue, Mercedes, and himself will stay still.
  • Claude almost actually convinced you to go easy on him.
  • Edelgard foreshadows her mercy to Claude.
  • Edelgard likes it when you are arrogant as well.
  • Edelgard attempts a more convincing friendship speech, but it’s still awkward.
  • Seteth explains that students do missions instead of community service.
  • The Flame Emperor reveals some different information.

Fire Emblem Three Houses – Chapter 1 (First Exploration)

I was forced to take more liberties due to the nature of so many mannerisms.  I’ll do my best to add footnotes to mark any peculiarities.

Summary of changes:

  • Dialogue is generally less verbose.
  • Alois makes a joke.
  • Gatekeeper says his signature line already.
  • Jeritza is less cold, but still distant.
  • Manuela hits on Male Byleth a bit differently.
  • The way Tomas welcomes you to the library is potential foreshadowing.
  • Edelgard thinks you and her have more than similar personalities going on.
  • Dimitri talks about some different things in different order.
  • Dimitri remarks that he has a habit of speaking more impolitely than he’d like.
  • Dimitri is more polite in the English version of his self-description.
  • Dimitri views Sylvain like an older brother.
  • Claude’s description of Hilda is simpler.
  • Dorothea doesn’t ask you to hear her sing sometime.
  • Petra’s expresses her lack of fluency differently.
  • Annette slips up a bit in her final line.
  • Leonie calls Raphael a baka.
  • Leonie wonders if Jeralt remembers her, rather than being sure Jeralt has told Byleth about her.

Fire Emblem Three Houses – Chapter 1: Three Houses (Before Selecting House)

白雲の章 White Clouds Chapter
大樹の節 Great Tree Moon
三つの学級 The Three Classes

Summary of changes:

  • The Japanese narrator does not announce the part number.
  • Edelgard already has a distaste for Garreg Mach in the cutscene which I hadn’t noticed in the English version
  • The Officers Academy is just “military academy”.
  • Jeralt claims you were born “several years after” the incident, as opposed the “many years after” in the English version.
  • The houses are called “classes” and have nicknames not used in the English version.
  • Although the text translates directly to Black Eagle, Blue Lion, and Golden Deer, the readings pronounced as the nickname.
  • The Black Eagles is read as “Adlerklasse”, Eagle Class in German.
  • The Blue Lions is read as “Löwenklasse”, Lion Class in German.
  • The Golden Deer is read as “Hirschklasse”, Deer Class in German.
  • Seteth feels a bit less harsh, but still harsh.

Fire Emblem Three Houses – Prologue

I’m starting a fan translation for Fire Emblem: Three Houses to understand what kind of changes localization companies decide to make when translating for general audiences.  I will be translating more literally to contrast with the official English translation.

Summary of changes:

  • Sothis teases you for watching her sleep, rather than calling you rude for interrupting her sleep.
  • The original translation for “I’m a demon” is “I’m an evil god”.
  • Jeralt speaks in regional dialect, sounding like a Kanto tough guy.
  • The option Jeralt doesn’t like in “A Skirmish at Dawn” makes more sense.
  • Claude’s Talk option in battle is pretty funny in hindsight.
  • Jeralt’s nickname actually means “The Blade who Breaks” as opposed to “The One who Breaks Blades”.
  • “I am no child” is a much funnier answer in the Japanese version.
  • Byleth asks Sothis to do a “Za Warudo”.
  • The “I’m a bandit” joke is explained a bit more.
  • Claude acts extra cute in “The Prince, the Princess and the Heir”
  • Claude asks what is your preference instead of your allegiance.
  • Your thoughts about the three class leaders are a bit more detailed.
