White Clouds Chapter
Harp Moon
Reminiscent Scenery
Summary of changes:
- It is more clear the Knights of Seiros are actively cornering the enemy at Zanado to make it as easy as possible for the students, rather than just keeping things under control.
- Jeralt is more specific on what he handled when you were both mercenaries. He didn’t handle everything, just the negotiations.
- Jeralt talks about you being accustomed to fighting alongside “your old man”, rather than being used to fighting bandits.
- Dorothea doesn’t look down on bandits specifically. She only mentions the enemies are at a level that they should be able to win without problems.
- Lindhart elaborates on why Dorothea’s optimism is unfounded.
- Lindhart had a line about not trying too hard that was simplified.
- Petra’s response to that line is more appropriate.
- Edelgard talks about “necessary sacrifices” on her first kill.
- Kostas and Edelgard’s dialogue isn’t about “noble vs commoner”, but about “those that have suffered vs those who haven’t”. Thus there is more poeticism in Edelgard’s response.
- Byleth remembers Zanado being more busier, rather than peaceful.

Opening
- In honor of saints who were born or died during this moon, the people of Fodlan perform the music those saints were considered to have liked.
- Through the songs of such instruments like harp or flute, the sounds of each being enjoyed dance between those who sow seed across the fields of Tailtean and Gronder .
- In honor of the saints whose births or deaths took place under this moon, the people perform music once beloved by those divine beings.
- Whether by harp, by flute, or voice alone, joyous melodies are shared between farmers as they sew their seeds across the vast plains of Tailtean and Gronder.
(Bandits on the Run)
- Seteth: Now then, as already mentioned, this month’s task will be bandit subjugation.
- For our dear students who have been learning battle theoretically, this will be a valuable opportunity to learn real battle.
- Of course, the subjugation will be carried out with the support of the knights. They should keep the progress of the battle in order for you.
- Nonetheless, this is not a mock fight. Make preparations accompanied with due caution.
- You will await contact from the knights and then set out. Until then, take care not to neglect preparations. That is all.
- Edelgard: When we were fighting bandits before, I was saved by Master. Maybe this time, I will be the one saving you.
- > 「Let’s do our best」
> 「Carelessness is forbidden」
Edelgard: The enemy’s strength has been gauged by the knights, and even the battlefield has been arranged for us. - It is harder to find any reason for us to lose but… until we leave, let’s do whatever needs to be done?
- Jeralt: Yo, are you getting used to life at the monastery?
- > 「I got used to it」
Jeralt: Oh? That’s surprising. - I mean, since I did all the negotiation work with our employers and such when we were mercenaries…
- and outside the battlefield, you ended up mostly avoiding contact with most people.
- I thought that suddenly getting thrown in with all those noble kids, working as a teacher and such was overdoing it, but…
- It looks like I had nothing to worry about.
- > 「I haven’t gotten used to it」
Jeralt: Well, you can’t help it. - I mean, since I did all the negotiation work with our employers and such when we were mercenaries…
- and outside the battlefield, you ended up mostly avoiding contact with most people.
- I thought that suddenly getting thrown in with all those noble kids, working as a teacher and such was overdoing it, but…
- Seems it’s just like I feared.
- Jeralt: …Speaking of which, I heard about it. Your most recent task, they said it was bandit subjugation.
- I’m sure you’re used to it with your old man, but it will be the first battle trying with the kids.
- You won’t sleep well if a student ends up dying, eh? Don’t get careless, command well, and get it done.
- …If only I could also help out, but Lady Rhea has forced various things on me.
- Even for me, I’m starting to look into what she wants out of you.
- So remember. It’s fine to settle down, but don’t let your guard down.
- Seteth: As you have already been notified, your mission is to subdue some bandits.
- Our students have been learning about combat through study, but this is a precious opportunity to provide them with practical experience.
- The knights will support your mission and are prepared to offer their assistance if necessary.
- In short, this is no mock battle. You must be prepared for anything.
- You will receive a message from the knights when it is time to depart. Until then, use your time wisely.
- Edelgard: The last time we fought bandits, you saved me. Maybe I can return the favor this time.
- > 「Let’s do our best.」
> 「Don’t get careless.」
Edelgard: The knights are well aware of our enemy’s strength. We can count of them to keep the battlefield under control for us. - It seems unlikely that we would lose. Still, let’s do all we can to prepare.
- Jeralt: You seem well. Are you adjusting to life at the monastery?
- > 「I think so.」
Jeralt: Oh? I didn’t expect that answer. - When we were mercenaries, I handled everything.
- Outside of battle, you didn’t have much contact with people, did you?
- I thought being thrown into a swarm of noble brats to teach would be a bit much for you.
- But I guess I had nothing to worry about.
- > 「Not quite.」
Jeralt: Well, I didn’t expect it would be easy on you. - When we were mercenaries, I handled everything.
- Outside of battle, you didn’t have much contact with people, did you?
- I thought being thrown into a swarm of noble brats to teach would be a bit much for you.
- It seems I was right to worry.
- Jeralt: By the way, I heard about those bandits. Your first assignment is to take them out, right?
- That’s fairly routine for you by now, but don’t forget it’s the first real taste of battle for those brats.
- It’ll be tougher to sleep at night if you let one of your little pupils die, so stay vigilant and lead them well.
- I wish I could offer you my support, but Lady Rhea won’t allow it.
- For now, I’ll try to figure out what she wants from you.
- I don’t mind you settling into your life here, but don’t let your guard down. Ever.
(The First Real Battle – Black Eagles)
- Edelgard: Master, everything is in place. The knights have contacted us and everyone has gathered.
- Hubert: Looks like the knights have the bandits cornered. The location is the Red Valley, Zanado.
- Caspar: Okay! I can’t wait to use my skills! I’ll finish off those wicked, inhuman bandits!
- Ferdinand: Casper, it’s fine if your rush in but could you not expose everyone else to danger?
- Bernadetta: Aah… I’ll go back! I’ll go baaack! I’m useless anyway and I hate pain…!
- Dorothea: It’s alright, Beru-chan. Our opponents should be at a level where even we can defeat them without incident.
- Lindhart: We can’t be optimistic as we don’t even have the analysis of the enemy’s battle strength. Only what the knights think.
- Well actually, since we won’t known until we try it out whether we’ll be enough, I’ll do exactly just enough…[1]適当, tekitou, is a Japanese word that basically means doing something just enough.
Depending on the context, it can either be seen as doing things “properly”, or “half-assing” it. Lindhart, of course, tends to half-ass it. - Petra: Just enough, is not enough. This is real battle. Let’s work together, completing… to complete, the task.
- > 「How lively」
> 「I’m anxious…」
Edelgard: Enough talk. Now, Master, give the signal to depart.
- Edelgard: Perfect timing, Professor. I just received word from the knights. They’ve located the bandits.
- Hubert: It seems they have them cornered. They are in Zanado, the Red Canyon.
- Caspar: I can’t wait to get started! I’ll strike down those heinous thieves before they know what hit them!
- Ferdinand: Charge ahead if you must, Caspar. Just do not put the rest of us in danger.
- Bernadetta: I’m going back. I won’t be of any help anyway, and I don’t want to get hurt.
- Dorothea: Don’t worry, Bern. It’s just some bandits. We’ll have no trouble at all.
- Lindhart: Eh, don’t get ahead of yourselves. Unfounded optimism isn’t a great strategy.
- Let’s just get this over with.
- Petra: There is nothing to get over. We will work with each other to achieve our mission.
- > 「You seem excited to get out there.」
> 「I’m not sure about this…」
Edelgard: It’s time, Professor. Give us our orders, and let’s move out.
(Subjugation Battle of the Red Valley)
- > Before Battle Preparations
- Sothis: Taking the children into battle, are we? …You will not sleep well if the children were to suffer in front of your eyes.
- I will allow you to use the power to rewind time. You cannot use it endlessly, so be careful!
- > Battle Start
- Edelgard: This is the Red Valley… Looks like some sort of ruins. Nevermind that, Master, let us begin.
- The bandits should have been driven inside the valley. Take care not to get bit by a cornered rat.
- Kostas: …Shit! Is it those knight guys? Freaking chasing us all the way here…!
- Bandit: Chief, let’s run away already! We can’t win against those guys!
- Kostas: …You dumbass, where would we run to now, huh?! How can you be a bandit if you’re afraid of dying?
- > Turn 1 Start
- Edelgard: Master… I hear there is a backroad on the west side. Should we split into two groups, the western and main front?
- If we proceed skillfully, we can do a pincer attack on the enemy. But, I’ll leave whatever we do up to you.
- Whatever you do, we have to first cross the bridge.
- > Defeating First Enemy
- > Edelgard
- Edelgard: It’s not like it doesn’t hurt my heart a bit… but it was a necessary sacrifice.
- > Hubert
- Hubert: I will also clean up for Lady Edelgard.
- > Ferdinand
- Ferdinand: Hmph… As I thought, the likes of bandits are no match for someone from a distinguished family such as myself!
- > Caspar
- Caspar: This is a real fight…! It surprisingly fires me up! Onto the next one!
- > Lindhart
- Lindhart: *pant*… I ended up killed them… Oh no… wow… the blood is spilling…
- > Bernadetta
- Berndetta: Please let me go home alreadyyyyy! It’s fine if they steaaaal!
- > Dorothea
- Dorothea: Being made to experience real combat like this… I wonder if this is part of the church’s teachings…?
- > Petra
- Petra: Man, beast, are not different. Calm, heart… and then, kill.
- > vs Bandit with Chest Key
- Bandit: We’re the ones who obtained this treasure! We’re not going to hand it over those Knights of Seiros!
- > Reaching Western Backroads
- Kostas: Tch, they’re even attacking from the west! All these kids make my head spin…!
- > vs Kostas
- Kostas: Sending brats and not knights to beat me, you’ve underestimated me!
- > Byleth vs Kostas
- Kostas: It can’t be… you’re that mercenary from that before! What are you doing getting involved with those knights?!
- I’ll freaking kill you… you along with all those cheeky brats!
- > Edelgard vs Kostas
- Kostas: Noble brat, you’ve never known hardships! This time, be good and die!
- Edelgard: So if one knows hardships, they get to kill their enemy? As expected, you are trash.
- > Kostas Defeated
- Kostas: That guy… It was a mistake… listening to him… Gahah…
- > After Battle Victory
- Edelgard: Thanks for the hard work with the command. There’s no way you would’ve lost the the same opponent, right, Master?
- Anyway, this valley… Isn’t it strange…?
- > Before Battle Preparations
- Sothis: So, we are taking children into battle, are we? I am not certain I will be able to sleep soundly after beholding something like that…
- I shall allow you to turn back the hands of time, but know this power is not infinite!
- > Battle Start
- Edelgard: So this is the Red Canyon… A ruin of sorts by the look of it. Let’s end this quickly.
- The thieves must have been driven back. Be careful, or the cornered mice might bite us.
- Kostas: The knights chased us all the way here?!
- Bandit: Chief, let’s get out of here! There’s no way we can win against them!
- Kostas: Shut your dumb mouth! Where would we go at this point? You can’t be a thief if you fear death!
- > Turn 1 Start
- Edelgard: Professor…I hear there’s a back road to the west. Why don’t we split up and attack from both the west and the front?
- If we advance tactfully, we can attack our enemy from both sides. I leave the rest to you.
- Regardless, we must cross the bridge first.
- > Defeating First Enemy
- > Edelgard
- Edelgard: Regrettable…but there was no other way.
- > Hubert
- Hubert: Allow me to clean this up for you, Lady Edelgard.
- > Ferdinand
- Ferdinand: These ruffians are no match for a noble like me!
- > Caspar
- Caspar: Are all real battles this exciting? Come on, let’s get on to the next one!
- > Lindhart
- Lindhart: I…I killed them. What have I done? The blood…
- > Bernadetta
- Berndetta: I don’t care if they’re stealing! Can I go home?!
- > Dorothea
- Dorothea: So, is making us experience a real battle part of the church’s teachings?
- > Petra
- Petra: People and beasts are as one. Calm your heart, and do not be worried about this killing.
- > vs Bandit with Chest Key
- Bandit: We stole this treasure! It’s all ours! There’s not way we’re gonna give it up to some knights!
- > Reaching Western Backroads
- Kostas: Damn, they’re coming from the west too! I can’t stand these brats!
- > vs Kostas
- Kostas: Sending these brats instead of the knights means they’ve underestimated me! Big mistake!
- > Byleth vs Kostas
- Kostas: Y-you’re… It can’t be! The mercenary from before? So what, now you’re pals with the knights?
- I’ll kill you and your pesky brats!
- > Edelgard vs Kostas
- Kostas: Spoiled little noble! Just die like a good little rich kid!
- Edelgard: Do you really think being born a commoner gives you the right to kill? Despicable.
- > Kostas Defeated
- Kostas: I should have never listened to that idiot… What a mistake..
- > After Battle Victory
- Edelgard: Thank you for leading us, Professor. Though I suppose there was no way we could lose to a familiar foe.
- In any case, something about this canyon feels…inexplicably strange.
(Memories of the Red Valley)
- Byleth: …
- > 「Seems this place used to be more lively…」
> 「At what point did they call it the “Red Valley”…」
Byleth: … - …?
- Sothis: Humm… Why is it in this place, I can recall something nostalgic?
- You’re such a small-livered fellow. Are you going to be startled every time I start talking to you?[2]Liver is the organ used in Japanese to refer to spirit and bravery, similar to the term “guts”.
- > 「Sorry」
> 「You startled me」
Sothis: Good grief… Aren’t you being too distracted even if the battle is over? - > 「I wasn’t startled」
Sothis: Hohoh. Did you think to deceive me? I am sad you think you can hide things from me. - Sothis: Well, whatever. Now, more importantly, about this valley.
- As far as I know, you have never visited this place…
- > 「Even so, it’s nostalgic」
Sothis: Something strange is also going on here. Perhaps, my memories and yours are…? - > 「Sothis, have you been here before?」
Sothis: To this valley? It seems like a place that if you came here even once, you could not forget. - Sothis: …As I thought, I don’t know. Other than the name, I can’t recall anything at all.
- Still, within the nostalgia, many of my emotions are revived. Happiness, sorrow, pain, affection…
- Perhaps, if I was once here, I wonder what I was doing…
- Edelgard: Master? So you were in this kind of place. Let’s return to the monastery soon.
- Sothis: …Looks like we must go. Well, I might remember someday.
- Now then, I must give you my thanks. You slayed the thieves that entered the valley.
- > 「Thanks?」
> 「Sothis, why are you…?」
Sothis: I don’t know. I just got the feeling that I must do so. - Anyways… Get accustomed to my voice soon, you!
- Even I will be worried if you get surprised and fall over every time.
- (Byleth shakes their head)
- Sothis: What, you say you don’t fall over? Pwaha, so you DO realize such things.
- Byleth: …
- > 「I remember this being a peaceful place…」
> 「Since when has it been called the Red Canyon…」
Byleth: … - …?
- Sothis: Hmm… I wonder why it is that you recall this place.
- You must be weak of heart. Each time I speak, it scares you so.
- > 「I’m sorry.」
> 「You surprised me.」
Sothis: Although the battle is at an end, do not feel too at ease. - > 「I’m not scared.」
Sothis: Do you think you can lie to me? It saddens me to know you wish to hide such things from me. - Sothis: Well, anyhow… I am quite fascinated by this place.
- As far as I can tell, this is your first time here…
- > 「Still, it feels familiar.」
Sothis: How very odd. I wonder if somehow, my memories have… Hmm. - > 「Have you been here before, Sothis?」
Sothis: Here? I daresay it would be impossible to have forgotten such as place as this. - Sothis: Beyond the name and this strange feeling of familiarity, I can’t seem to remember anything about this place.
- And yet…a great depth of emotion is tied to that sense of familiarity. Like joy and sorrow. Pain and love. And all things in between…
- If I was somehow here before, I wonder what took place…
- Edelgard: Professor? I was wondering where you were… It’s about time we headed back to the monastery.
- Sothis: It is time to depart. But know that time reveals all things. One day, I will remember that which I have lost…
- Oh, by the way. It seems you’ve earned my gratitude. The thieves who came here are no more.
- > 「Why are you grateful?」
> 「Why are you…」
Sothis: I am not sure myself, yet I am grateful all the same. - In any case… You must become accustomed to my voice!
- If you fall down with shock each time I speak, that just won’t do.
- Sothis: Oh… You think you’re standing strong? Of course you are! It was a jest.
(After the First Mission – Black Eagles)
- Edelgard: Master, I was looking out over the Red Valley while we were going back, but did you think there was anything strange as well?
- > 「What do you mean?」
Edelgard: My… Maybe I was mistaken. A bit unfortunate. - > 「I thought so」
Edelgard: Indeed. I thought you would feel the same way. - Edelgard: There are many archaeological sites in that valley, but all of them are strange.
- They were constructed in a style different from any era of the Empire.
- Of course, they also differ from the Kingdom and Alliance’s unique cultures. In other words…
- I get the feeling the valley existed around ancient times before the creation of the Empire, and then perished…
- Master, what in the world do you think lived in that valley?
- > 「Our ancestors」
Edelgard: What an incredibly harmless and inoffensive answer. I suppose… - > 「An already extinct race」
> 「Could it be… mole people?[3]Subterraneans, or “underground people”, are the equivalent of aliens but from underground.
They are considered to be a different species. The closest thing in English is “mole people”」
Edelgard: Fufu, maybe they’re not even human. - Edelgard: And perhaps even now, their remains are still influencing this world…
- Edelgard: On our way out, I had the chance to observe the Red Canyon… Did you notice anything, Professor?
- > 「What are you talking about?」
Edelgard: Oh, I suppose it was only me, then. - > 「I did.」
Edelgard: Of course. I expected as much. - Edelgard: The area was covered in ruins, each more curious than the last.
- They did not match the architectural style of any era or culture within the Empire.
- Or across all of Fódlan, for that matter. That can only mean one thing…
- The valley’s civilization must have flourished and fallen in the distant past, long before the Empire was established.
- Who do you think lived there?
- > 「Our ancestors.」
Edelgard: What an uninspired answer…but you’re probably right. - > 「A culture long since perished.」
> 「Subterranean beings.」
Edelgard: Heh, it’s possible they weren’t even human. - Edelgard: Hmm, perhaps their remnants still influence this world…
(Report – Harp Moon)
- Rhea: It appears you were able to subjugate the bandits without incident. I pray that their souls will be saved…
- But why were they targeting students…? We must investigate what is behind all this.
- Please give the students support so that they may put their needless worries at ease.
- > 「Of course」
> 「I will do all I can」
Rhea: Yes, after all, I expect much from you. - By the way, how did you find Zanado?
- There are legends that say that valley is the place where the Goddess descended in ancient times.
- For the Goddess from the heavens, Zanado was surely a temporary residence on this world.
- > 「Goddess…?」
> 「Temporary residence…?」
Rhea: Once, Saint Seiros was gifted the word of the Goddess to guide the lost people. - The Goddess always lives in Heaven, watching over Fodlan.
- But… in an older era, it is said that the Goddess herself descended to this world to give salvation to the people.
- As the mother to all living things, as support of all mindful things…[4]This line plus the one two lines above are also found inscribed in the game’s magic circles.
- > 「I didn’t know」
> 「Father never taught me」
Rhea: Is, that so…[5]I feel much more tangible disappointment in this line. - While serving as a teacher here, I pray you will become a devout follower of the Church of Seiros.
- Seteth: Archbishop, may I have a bit of your time? I would like to hear more on the bandit situation…
- Rhea: Understood. We will continue our conversation again next change we meet.
- Sothis: Goddess, you say… It seems ordinary but, I am not met with any memories.
- But, this really bothers me. It seems like I know, but seems like I don’t know…
- Perhaps… maybe I lived in Zanado at the same time as the Goddess.
- If that’s the case, what am I now? Am I a ghost?
- > 「Definitely that」
Sothis: Do you really think it was something like that, you idiot?! It’s not like I’m dead. - > 「I don’t know」
Sothis: Hmph, were you thinking I was a ghost or something? It’s not like I’m dead. - Sothis: And we have me being here together with you like this, don’t we? Or is it something else?
- Could it be that I, without ascending to heaven due to lingering regret, have possessed you to wander the world aimlessly?
- I cannot have such an empty existence! I… I…
- Rhea: So, you have safely disposed of those bandits. I pray that their souls find salvation.
- But why did they target the students to begin with? We must further investigate the true cause of all that took place.
- Until we know more, I ask that you support the students and relieve them of any unnecessary worry.
- > 「Of course.」
> 「I will do all I can.」
Rhea: Good. I have high expectations for you. - By the way, how did you find Zanado?
- By the way, how was your time in Zanado? Legend has it, in ancient times, a goddess alighted upon this world in that very canyon.
- For a goddess from heavens, Zanado could only have been a temporary haven.
- > 「A Goddess?」
> 「A temporary haven?」
Rhea: Long ago, the divine Seiros received a revelation from the goddess. A gift, to help the lost. - The goddess is always watching over Fódlan from her kingdom above.
- However, in ancient times, the goddess graced this world with her presence and offered salvation to the people here.
- She is the mother of all life, the arbiter of every soul.
- > 「I didn’t know.」
> 「My father never told me.」
Rhea: I see. - During your time here, I pray that you come to devote yourself to the teachings of Seiros.
- Seteth: Uh…Lady Rhea, I am sorry to interrupt. There is something I must ask about in regard to those bandits…
- Rhea: As you wish. We shall continue our discussion when next we meet.
- Sothis: A goddess… I have no memory of her. But then… I have no memory at all!
- Oh, how bothersome! It is as though I know…and yet I don’t.
- Perhaps Zanado was my home back when the goddess walked the land.
- If so… What does that make me now? A ghost?
- > 「That must be it.」
Sothis: Are you simple?! That’s impossible! I am most certainly alive. - > 「I don’t know.」
Sothis: Hmm… No. That cannot be. I am most certainly alive. - Sothis: Of course, we also have the mystery of why I’m here with you. Is it somehow connected?
- Perhaps some past regret is stopping me from moving on, and now I’m forced to stay with you instead…
- No, that’s not it! I can’t believe in such a meaningless existence! I… I…
