White Clouds Chapter
Garland Moon
Rebellion in the Mist

Just to clarify, all references to the Lord can be replaced with “the Goddess”, because the Lord of Fodlan is the Goddess.

Summary of changes:

Previous: Chapter 2 (Black Eagles) | Next: Chapter 4 (Black Eagles)

Opening

  • When the warm winds from the sea south of Adrestia appear to blow, the people of Fodlan know the coming of the rainy season.
  • Before they are battered and bruised by the harsh rain, young women hurriedly knit garlands of white roses and give them people such as loved ones or those they have a close relationship with.
  • When the warm winds blow from the from the sea to the south of Adrestia, residents of Fodlan know that the rainy season is upon them.
  • Before the heavy rains take their toll, the young women hurry to pick the last of the white roses. The ivory buds are woven into garlands and given as gifts to close friends or potential lovers.

(Report of a Rebellion)

  • Rhea: Byleth, I want to make another request to your class.
  • Seteth: Truth is, I have just received news that Lord Lonato has raised troops against our Holy Church.
  •
  • > 「Who is Lord Lonato?」
    > 「Why would he do that?」
Rhea: …Lord Lonato is a minor feudal lord of the Kingdom. He has been showing hostility to the church for quite some time.
  • Seteth: A vanguard from the Knights of Seiros is already heading to his stronghold, Castle Gaspard.
  • The strength of Lord Lonato’s army is low.  They should be put down before long.
  • Rhea: Would you and the students help cleanup the aftermath with the rear guard of the knights?
  • Seteth: Nonetheless, you never know whether something will come up on the battlefield. You should prepare your equipment just in case.
  •
  • Catherine: Excuse me. Lady Rhea, I heard you called for me?[1]Catherine refers to herself as atashi, which is standard casual feminine.
However, it is written in katakana unlike other girls who use it such as Bernadetta and Hilda.
  • Rhea: Byleth, she is Catherine, the one who will lead the knights accompanying you.
  • Catherine: Nice to meet you. We’ve heard rumors about you. If something comes up, feel free to ask us.[2]Catherine refers to you super casually as “anta”.
This is also in katakana, which implies an emphasis of sorts.
  • Rhea: She is a brave soldier of the Knights of Seiros, but the other knights we have assembled are also elite.
  • This assignment is primarily so that the students can learn the foolishness of raising blades against us…
  • Rhea: Professor, I have a new mission for your students.
  • Seteth: We have received reports that Lord Lonato has rallied troops against the Holy Church of Seiros.
  •
  • > 「Who is Lord Lonato?」
    > 「Why would he do that?」
Rhea: Lord Lonato is a minor lord of the Kingdom. He has been showing hostility towards the church for some time now.
  • Seteth: A vanguard unit from the Knights of Seiros is already on its way to his stronghold, Castle Gaspard.
  • Lord Lonato’s army is nothing compared to the knights. It’s quite possible the rebellion has already been suppressed.
  • Rhea: Even so, I would like for your class to travel with the knights’ rear guard to deal with the aftermath.
  • Seteth: War zones are unpredictable. We do not expect you will have cause to battle, but be prepared for the worst.
  •
  • Catherine: Excuse me. You sent for me, Lady Rhea?
  • Rhea: This is Catherine. She will be leading the knights whom you will be accompanying.
  • Catherine: Nice to meet you. We’ve heard a lot about you. If you need anything, just ask.
  • Rhea: She is one of our bravest knights, and that is no small feat. Only an exceptional few have what it takes to join the Knights of Seiros.
  • This mission should prove useful in demonstrating to the students how foolish it would be to ever turn their blades on the church…

Event: 五里霧中・黒鷲の学級 (Inside a Five League Fog)[3]里, or ri, is a measurement about 2.5 miles or 4km.

  • Hubert: If Miss “Thunderbolt Catherine” accompanies us, we should be safe no matter what strong enemy appears.
  •
  • > 「Thunderbolt?」
    > 「Thunderbird?」
Catherine: Huh, you don’t know? This is “Thunderbolt”… one of the Hero’s Heirlooms.[4]Catherine’s nickname is tied to her relic weapon.
雷霆 is both lightning and thunder and can be translated as either, i.e. Lightning from FFXIII or the Oklahoma City Thunder.
  • A long time ago, 10 heroes were bestowed power from the goddess…Holy weapons that were handed down to their descendants.
  • But anyways, there won’t have a chance to play around with Thunderbolt this time. Our mission is to do aftermath cleanup, after all.[5]Catherine appears to use Tokyo style slang.
  • Hubert: Still, I wonder why Lord Lonato would raise such a reckless rebellion…?
  • Catherine: Do you all known about the Tragedy of Duscur?
  •
  • > 「I’ve heard of it」
    > 「I don’t know much about it」
Edelgard: I remember it well. It was a devastating incident, after all.
  • It was the incident four years ago where the king of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus was killed by the people of Duscur, was it not?
  • Catherine: Simply put, yes, but there were also accomplices within the kingdom.
  • One of them, Lord Lonato’s son Christophe, was handed over to the church and executed.
  •
  • > 「The Church executes criminals?」
Catherine: From the Church’s standpoint, they just pass judgement according to the teachings in place of the Kingdom, which is in chaos.
  • > 「Why was the king targeted?」
Catherine: King Lambert was trying to make large scale political reform, so he had many political opponents.
  •
  • Catherine: …Whatever really happened in the incident, I guess Lord Lonato has held a grudge against the church since then.
  • No… to be precise he holds a grudge against the church, as well as those who turned them over to the church.
  •
  • Church Soldier: Report! The enemy is approaching! We can’t avoid them!
  • The enemy army’s strength is greater than expected, they slipped through the knight’s encirclement due to the fog!
  • Catherine: Crap… Byleth, change of plans.  All hands, prepare for battle!
  • Hubert: No matter how powerful our enemies may be, there is no need to worry so long as we’re with Catherine, the mighty wielder of Thunderbrand.
  •
  • > 「Thunderbrand?」
    > 「What are you talking about?」
Catherine: You mean you don’t know? My weapon is called Thunderbrand. It’s one of the Hero’s Relics.
  • A long, long time ago, the goddess bestowed divine weapons upon 10 heroes, which were passed down to their descendants.
  • It’s an honor to wield, but I’m afraid there won’t be any chance for that today. Our mission is to help clean up the aftermath, not to fight.
  • Hubert: One must wonder why Lord Lonato would incite such a reckless rebellion.
  • Catherine: It all goes back to the Tragedy of Duscur…
  •
  • > 「I’ve heard of it.」
    > 「I don’t know much about it.」
Edelgard: I remember that day well. No one saw it coming.
  • Roughly four years ago, the king of Faerghus was murdered by the people of Duscur. I believe that about sums it up, correct?
  • Catherine: To put it simply, yes. But there’s more to that story. They had accomplices within the Kingdom as well.
  • Lord Lonato’s son, Christophe, was one of them, and so he was handed over to the church for execution.
  •
  • > 「The church executes criminals?」
Catherine: Speaking from the church’s perspective, we simply passed judgement according to our doctrine in place of the Kingdom, which was in complete chaos.
  • > 「Why was the king targeted?」
Catherine: King Lambert was attempting a major political reform. Needless to say, he had many enemies.
  •
  • Catherine: Whatever the truth behind that incident may be, Lord Lonato has harbored resentment to the church ever since.
  • Well… To be more specific, his grudge isn’t only against the church. It’s also against the one who turned Christophe over to them…
  •
  • Church Soldier: Report! The enemy is approaching! They can’t be avoided.
  • Their numbers are far greatly than we predicted. They used the fog to slip past the knights’ perimeter!
  • Catherine: It looks like our mission just changed, Professor. Everyone, prepare for battle!

(The Magred Ambush Battle)

  • > Battle Start
  • Catherine: This fog is thick, so we can’t gauge where and how many enemies there are.
  • The enemies from inside the fog are… encircling us? They shouldn’t have enough soldiers to form a thick circle, though.
  • Attack every enemy that breaks off and smash through the encirclement!
  • Edelgard: The smell of blood… Looks like the battle has already begun inside the fog.
  •
  • > Turn 1 Start
  • Catherine: Everyone, don’t rush in unprepared! Crush the enemy with precision after they enter your view!
  •
  • > vs Militia(Archer)
  • Militia: Uwooo! Did you think we would just let our feudal lord die?!
  •
  • > Ashe Deployed On Militia Defeat
  • Ashe: Even everyone from the town is on the battlefield… Lord Lonato, why would you do this…?!
  •
  • > vs Militia(Warrior)
  • Militia: Lord Lonato’s sorrow and rage… by our hands, we’ll make you feel them!
  •
  • > Militia(Soldier) Defeated
  • Militia: Lord Lonato… Please, live on… instead of us…!
  • Edelgard: What a shame… For Lord Lonato, he most likely won’t even have the ability to fulfill their wish.
  •
  • > vs Gaspard Commander
Gaspard Commander: I won’t let you get closer to Lord Lonato…!
  •
  • > Movie「The Hero’s Heirloom」
  • Lonato: Cassandra… Thunderjail Cassandra! The cursed zealot who betrayed my son…![6]Catherine’s old name is a combination of 雷(thunder/lightning) and 獄 (jail/prison).
  • Catherine: My name is Catherine. The sword of the Knights of Seiros who serves the Goddess,
  • you will taste it!
  •
  • > After the Movie
  • Lonato: Though the fog clears, the regret of my son does not! May the Lord’s judgement (fall) upon the church rotten to the core…!!
  •
  • > Catherine approaches Lonato
  • Lonato: Only you, if I (kill) only you…!
  • Catherine: So you have completely lost sight of justice.
  • At least I will be the one to send you back.  Back to meet your maker…!
  •
  • > vs Lonato
  • Lonato: So you are being deceived by that she-fox as well…? I have no choice but to make you see the truth!
  •
  • > Ashe vs Lonato
  • Lonato: Ashe… You will step aside. I must kill these demons.  Without fail!
  • Ashe: Lord Lonato… please stop this already! Why are you behaving so recklessly…?!
  • Lonato: Rhea is an infidel who deceives everyone and blasphemes the Lord! Justice is with us, and the Lord’s divine protection is with us!
  • Ashe: Even so, doing it like this is wrong!  You even went so far as to mobilize the townsfolk!
  • Lonato: …If that’s what you truly feel, then turn your blade on me! There is no going back for me anymore…!
  •
  • > Lonato Defeated
  • Lonato: That… damned, she-fox… Ah… Christophe… Forgive, your father…
  •
  • > After Battle Victory
  • > Ashe Deployed
  • Ashe: Lord Lonato… I’m…
  •
  • Catherine: …I never thought I’d see Lord Lonato meet his fate in this form.
  • Good job, everyone. Gather up our each of your soldiers and get ready.
  • > Battle Start
  • Catherine: With this fog, it’s impossible to tell where the enemy might be…or how many of them there are.
  • The enemy could be trying to surround us, but they shouldn’t have enough soldiers to form a tight circle.
  • Take down anyone who breaks through the dog, and let’s push through!
  • Edelgard: That smell… It’s fresh blood. It seems the battle has already started within the fog.
  •
  • > Turn 1 Start
  • Catherine: Proceed with caution! Wait for them to enter your field of view.
  •
  • > vs Militia(Archer)
  • Militia: You would think we’re just gonna do nothing while you try to kill our lord?!
  •
  • > Ashe Deployed On Militia Defeat
  • Ashe: Why, Lonato? Why did you drag so many others into this?
  •
  • > vs Militia(Warrior)
  • Militia: Lord Lonato doesn’t deserve such sadness and anger… Now it’s your turn to suffer!
  •
  • > Militia(Soldier) Defeated
  • Militia: Lord Lonato… Please, don’t die…
  • Edelgard: I’m sorry, but I don’t believe Lord Lonato has the strength to carry on.
  •
  • > vs Gaspard Commander
Gaspard Commander: I won’t let you anywhere near Lord Lonato!
  •
  • > Movie「Hero’s Relic」
  • Lonato: Thunderstrike Cassandra! It was your wretched zealotry that killed my son!
  • Catherine: The only name I answer to is Catherine. Prepare to taste the blade of one who serves the goddess.
  • Now you face a Knight of Seiros!
  •
  • > After the Movie
  • Lonato: The fog has cleared. There’s nothing left to hide you or the filthy Central Church from the judgement of the goddess!
  •
  • > Catherine approaches Lonato
  • Lonato: You! I will be the one to kill you, no other!
  • Catherine: You have lost all sense of justice.
  • You want to fight me? So be it. I’ll send you to meet your goddess.
  •
  • > vs Lonato
  • Lonato: You have been deceived by that witch… I will show you the truth!
  •
  • > Ashe vs Lonato
  • Lonato: Stand down, Ashe. I must destroy these evil-doers by any means necessary!
  • Ashe: Please surrender, Lonato! Whatever your reason for doing this, we can still talk it out!
  • Lonato: Rhea is an infidel who has deceived the people and desecrated the goddess! We have virtue and the goddess herself on our side!
  • Ashe: Even if all that’s true, dragging the townsfolk into it like this isn’t right!
  • Lonato: Enough. If that is how you feel, prepare yourself! I’m putting an end to this!
  •
  • > Lonato Defeated
  • Lonato: That vile woman… Christophe… Forgive me…
  •
  • > After Battle Victory
  • > Ashe Deployed
  • Ashe: Lonato, I…
  •
  • Catherine: I never thought I’d see Lonato meet this fate.
  • Well done, everyone. Let’s gather our troops and go.

(To Know War – Black Eagles)

  • Caspar: Shit… What was that all for…? It even got to the point where people were crying!
  • Ferdinand: Putting innocent people’s lives at risk… he was not a man who was worthy of nobility.
  • Hubert: What could have actually impelled Lord Lonato to this?
  • Edelgard: …It seems everyone is a bit shaken from the militia being on the enemy side.
  •
  • > 「There was nothing we could do」
    > 「This is reality」
Edelgard: Yes. It would be nice if everyone was able to face reality, though.
  • The people who supported Lonato fought for what they thought was justice.
  • That’s why I believe it is wrong to simply treat them like they were victims.
  • We must continue to eliminate our opponents who hold conflicting views of justice.
  • Even if those enemies are like gods themselves…
  •
  • > 「Be that as it may…[7]Byleth says “Sasuga ni”, which is hard to translate.
It basically means “as expected” when you agree, but can also mean “nevertheless” when you disagree.

Edelgard: Master, that time may also come for you. You should prepare for that.
  • > 「I agree」
Edelgard: My, is it okay for a teacher to say things like that?  You surprised me.
  •
  • Edelgard: I am definitely the same as Lord Lonato. For my own justice, I will become an emperor who risks other people’s lives.
  • Without doing so, one cannot accomplish great things, and so those people’s deaths will not be in vain…
  •
  • Catherine: Sorry to interrupt.  …The roots of this incident may be unexpectedly deep.
  • In Lord Lonato’s personal belongings, he had this.  …A note hinting the assassination of Lady Rhea.
  • The sender is unknown and the authenticity is suspect, but aren’t the contents are too disturbing to ignore?
  • We’ll return and report to Lady Rhea. I hope nothing happens…
  • Caspar: Damn it! It was all so pointless. I’ve never seen so many people utterly heartbroken…
  • Ferdinand: Forcing innocent citizens to risk their lives… That man was not a noble, but a monster.
  • Hubert: What could have pushed Lord Lonato to this point?
  • Edelgard: Everyone was a bit shaken by the militia fighting alongside our enemies.
  •
  • > 「No used dwelling on it.」
    > 「That is the reality of battle.」
Edelgard: If only everyone could face reality so unflinchingly.
  • The commoners who allied themselves with Lord Lonato believed they were fighting for a just cause.
  • It would be disrespectful to consider them simply victims when they died for what they believed in.
  •  Still, we have no choice but to eliminate those who cling to unreasonable ideas of justice.
  • Even if our enemies are the gods themselves…we must never lose sight of our goal.
  •
  • > 「That’s taking it a bit far.
Edelgard: Is it? Such a day may come, whether you expect it or not. You should be ready.
  • > 「I agree」
Edelgard: I’m surprised to hear you say that.
  •
  • Edelgard: Really, I’m just like Lonato. I, too, will be the sort of ruler who’s willing to risk the lives of my citizens in service of a higher cause.
  • It’s not possible to change the world without sacrifice. Dying for the greater good is not a death in vain.
  •
  • Catherine: Professor… I’m afraid this incident is far more serious than anticipated.
  • I found this on Lord Lonato. It’s a note that mentions a plan to assassinate Lady Rhea.
  • We can’t tell who sent it, so the source is suspect, but the content is too disturbing to ignore.
  • We must report this to Lady Rhea right away. I hope that it’s nothing…

(Report – Garland Moon)

  • Rhea: You returned nice and safely. This too much be the Lord’s divine protection…
  • No, it can’t be only divine protection. You are, as I expected, exceptionally talented.
  •
  • > 「It was the student’s strength」
    Rhea: Was it, now?
  • > 「I’m still inexperienced」
Rhea: There is no need to be so modest.
  •
  • Rhea: It appears there are those among the students who hesitated to fight the militia.
  • Even if they are militia, you mush punish those who could do harm to the other believers.
  • The final fate of those foolish enough to turn their blades at the heavens… that must also be understood by the students, right?
  • Seteth: Now then, the problem is the matter of the secret message in the report from Catherine.
  • In the secret message, an unforgivable plot to attack the Archbishop at the same time as the Goddess Rebirth Ceremony was written.
  • I think the plot lacks feasibility, but… it is better to make sure and be vigilant.
  • There, on the day of the ceremony, I’m thinking that I want you and the students to also cooperate on security.
  •
  • > 「We will tackle this with all our strength」
    > 「We will put forth our best effort」
Rhea: I thank you for the reassuring words.
  • > 「Danger befalling the students is…」
Rhea: Even if you encounter an enemy stronger than the students, you should be okay if you are together with them.
  •
  • Seteth: The Rebirth Ceremony is is a very important ceremony for the wish for the main Goddess of the Church of Seiros to descend.
  • When the Archbishop and I commence the ceremony, we will be bound within the Goddess Tower.
  • Of course, the knights will also be on emergency lookout, but
we lack the manpower to keep an eye out on every corner.
  • It was not my intention to mobilize the students, but they say the back cannot replace the stomach.[8]This is a Japanese saying that means “sometimes sacrifices must be made”.
This saying comes from choosing to protect your front or back when attacked.
Protecting your stomach will get you struck in the back, which is bad.
However, protecting your back will get you struck in the stomach, which is worse.
  • Rhea: You do not need to be worried about something happening to me, but we cannot turn a blind eye to those who desecrate our faith.
  • Seteth: It would be good if nothing happens. Still, I hope you keep the sense of tension.  That is all.
  • Rhea: I am glad to see that you have returned safely. The goddess is gracious with her divine protection.
  • But it was not only her divine protection that shielded you, was it? You are just as skilled as I had hoped.
  •
  • > 「My students deserve the praise.」
Rhea: I am not so sure.
  • > 「I still have much to learn.」
Rhea: There is no need for modesty.
  •
  • Rhea: I heard some of the students were…hesitant about fighting militia.
  • However, we must punish any sinner who may inflict harm upon believers, even if those sinners are civilians.
  • I pray the students learned a valuable lesson about the fate that awaits all who are foolish enough to point their blades towards the heavens.
  • Seteth: Our real concern is what Catherine reported. The secret message that was in Lord Lonato’s possession.
  • It contained a deplorable plot to target the archbishop on the day of the Goddess’s Rite of Rebirth.
  • The plan seems unrealistic at best… But a threat is a threat. We must maintain constant vigilance.
  • To that end, I would like for you and your students to help with security on the day of the ritual.
  •
  • > 「You can count on us.」
    > 「We won’t let her down.」
Rhea: That is most reassuring. You have my gratitude.
  • > 「Won’t that endanger the students?」
Rhea: Even if they encounter an enemy whom they cannot best, they should be fine so long as they have you on their side.
  •
  • Seteth: The Rite of Rebirth is of paramount importance. It is when the Church of Seiros and its believers unite to pray for the return of the goddess.
  • The archbishop and I will be confined to the Goddess Tower once the ritual begins.
  • Of course, the knights will be on high alert as well, but there aren’t enough of them to keep watch on every corner of the monastery.
  • It is far from ideal to be forced to mobilize students, but the gravity of this situation requires that we all bend to avoid breaking.
  • Rhea: While there is no need to fear for my safety, we cannot turn a blind eye to those who would blaspheme so heinously.
  • Seteth: With any luck, this will all be for naught. Still, be on your guard.

Notes
1 Catherine refers to herself as atashi, which is standard casual feminine.
However, it is written in katakana unlike other girls who use it such as Bernadetta and Hilda.
2 Catherine refers to you super casually as “anta”.
This is also in katakana, which implies an emphasis of sorts.
3 里, or ri, is a measurement about 2.5 miles or 4km.
4 Catherine’s nickname is tied to her relic weapon.
雷霆 is both lightning and thunder and can be translated as either, i.e. Lightning from FFXIII or the Oklahoma City Thunder.
5 Catherine appears to use Tokyo style slang.
6 Catherine’s old name is a combination of 雷(thunder/lightning) and 獄 (jail/prison).
7 Byleth says “Sasuga ni”, which is hard to translate.
It basically means “as expected” when you agree, but can also mean “nevertheless” when you disagree.
8 This is a Japanese saying that means “sometimes sacrifices must be made”.
This saying comes from choosing to protect your front or back when attacked.
Protecting your stomach will get you struck in the back, which is bad.
However, protecting your back will get you struck in the stomach, which is worse.
