Crest – Sail Away

Title: Sail Away
Circle: Crest
Vocal: Lyn-A
Lyrics: Peko
Arrangement: JeetSingh
Release Date: Dec 30, 2013
Requested By: Yohanes Paulus

A very old KanColle arrange from the same year the game was released.  Most fans of KanColle music have heard this song from one place or another, and I’m frankly very surprised that nobody has translated it yet.  If I had to pick an arrange to be the most “2014-sounding” KanColle arrange, I would probably choose this one.  As for the lyrics, the message is pretty straightforward:  Press on, fight for the one you love, don’t give up.

Pizuya’s Cell –

(Jekyll’s Love Verification Test)
Circle: Pizuya’s Cell
(Futoumeido)
(Tora Saki Manami)
Arrangement: pizuya, yuta, hellnian
Release Date: Dec 29, 2016 (C91)
Requested By: Ihsan Bintang Ariaji

A very quick-paced, darker rendition of Hangover of Bedfellows Dreaming Differently.  It’s quite dense in terms of lyrics per bar and transforms the song quite liberally by only preserving the first note of each bar in the main riff and changing up how the song reaches the next bar.  I noticed this trend of transformation happens a lot more as Touhou Circles get older and feel the need to separate with the original composition which bothers some fans.  However, some of my favorite arranges significantly deviate from the original so I actually welcome the change (I feel Hangover of Bedfellows Dreaming Differently is a little harder to arrange in the first place).

The song itself is about someone who constantly fears that her lover doesn’t truly love her back and puts them through tests that she herself knows are cruel and terrible.  The lyrics of the song are joy to read like most songs from Pizuya, which is a bit of a shame due to how crowded they feel in the song.  I also started to mark syllable emphasis in the romaji.

Touken Ranbu Katsugeki – 灯

Title:  灯 (Akari)
(Tooru Sakurai) as Tonbokiri
Lyrics: カヨコ (Kayoko)
(Yuichi Murata)
Release Date:  Aug 23, 2017
Requested By: Crossy Aidae

This song is the duet song for two blades in Touken Ranbu, the Tantou Yagen Toushirou and the Spear Tonbokiri.  The song appears to be about a night after a battle, where the survivors mourn fallen comrades. A very popular BL ship, they are shown several times together in Hanamaru and Katsugeki.   I do not know of any exact historic precedence for the pairing, but the owners of the blades were allies; Yagen Toushirou was used by Oda Nobunaga and Tonbokiri was used by Honda Tadakatsu who served Tokugawa Ieyasu (who served Nobunaga).

MOSAIC.WAV – ストレス Free Style

Free Style (Stress Free Style)
Circle: MOSAIC.WAV
Album:
Vocal:
Release Date: Aug 20, 2012 (C82)
Requested By: Jessica H.

I received a request to translate this song from a pretty well known group, MOSIAC.WAV.  I don’t normally listen to denpa since isn’t one of my preferred genres, but this song presented plenty of good challenges in terms of slang terms and anime concepts.  The song itself is about growing up and not being able to find time for entertainment, as well as how media portrayal doesn’t even remotely prepare you for how the world actually is.

Title:
Circle: C-CLAYS
Vocal: 小峠 舞 (Mai Kotoge)
(Amane Myu)
(Atoguru)
Release Date: Dec 30, 2017
Requested By: Joseph Clemenson

This is a song that I’ve heard a lot but never would have figured out that it was Bismarck’s Image song.  However, I definitely makes more sense once you understand the lyrics.  The song tells of a solemn tale of a girl born for war, departed to foreign seas and cannot go home.  Only the silhouette of something/someone beloved can comfort her as she is laid to rest.

Touken Ranbu Hanamaru –

(Touch With Your Secrets, Pair of Sparks)
(Masahiro Yamanaka)
Arrangement: 滝沢 章 (Akira Takizawa)
Release Date: Feb 2, 2018
Requested By:  Crossy Aidae

My first request for Touken Ranbu, a series about sword boys.  This song is a conversation between two swords who appear to be engaged in “battle”.  The first singer is Kikkou Sadamune, has somewhat of an masochistic personality.   Meanwhile, the second singer is Sengo Muramasa is known to have more of a sadistic personality.  The euphemistic language in strong in the song, with plenty of double meanings bold enough for an amateur like me to spot.

Unofficial Lyrics

A theme song from the game (The Disappearing of Gensokyo), a very polished-looking fangame by MyACG Studio in collaboration with Yuuhei Satellite and Shoujo Fractal.  I’ll definitely need to pick a physical copy of this game up when I head to Japan in September.

(Deep Blue)
Circle: Kinema106
Vocal: lino
Lyrics: Tom
Arrangement: Tom, jun-jun
Release Date: Sep 9, 2017
Requested By: VocalC Google

My first KanColle request after my hiatus, it’s nice to return to a Kinema106 song (mostly because I know Tom and don’t need to ask permission to repost his videos on my channel).  This song devoted to the Abyssal Jellyfish Princess has all of the awesome hallmarks of a Kinema106 abyssal song:  Striking aggressive dark vocals, English-Japanese wordplay, usage of WW2 codes, and a secret encoded message for us to decipher.  If you want to see another earlier song like this, check out Kinema106 – Rend Ens (which I also translated).

(Hangover)
(ShinRa-Bansho)
Vocal: あよ (Ayo)
Lyrics: ticat
Arrangement: kaztora
Release Date:  Dec 29, 2017 (Comiket 93)

Despite how simple this song first sounded, I found myself really struggling with this one.  Shinra-Bansho fit a few references in this song, some of which I’m sure I’ve missed.   From what I can tell, this song is about Suika’s drinking and why she does it.  Just like the original Broken Moon, it’s bubbly and upbeat but I feel it carries a very sad undertone to it.  Cheers!

(Absolutely-Will-Kill-Chang’e Man’s Song)
Circle: IOSYS
(Rina Kurosawa)
Lyrics: nukillizo
Arrangement: minami
Release Date: May 7, 2017 (Reitaisai 14)

It’s been a while! Once I heard this jovial, creative tune, I knew it had to be IOSYS. This song has a very classic Japanese “cartoon superhero” feel to it. Follow the adventures of “Absolutely-Will-Kill-Chang’e Man” as she goes on a quest to defeat the evil Chang’e! The promo video has an amusing animation, but is marred an awful hard sub as a joke.
