Fire Emblem Three Houses – Prologue

I’m starting a fan translation for Fire Emblem: Three Houses to understand what kind of changes localization companies decide to make when translating for general audiences.  I will be translating more literally to contrast with the official English translation.

Summary of changes:

  • Sothis teases you for watching her sleep, rather than calling you rude for interrupting her sleep.
  • The original translation for “I’m a demon” is “I’m an evil god”.
  • Jeralt speaks in regional dialect, sounding like a Kanto tough guy.
  • The option Jeralt doesn’t like in “A Skirmish at Dawn” makes more sense.
  • Claude’s Talk option in battle is pretty funny in hindsight.
  • Jeralt’s nickname actually means “The Blade who Breaks” as opposed to “The One who Breaks Blades”.
  • “I am no child” is a much funnier answer in the Japanese version.
  • Byleth asks Sothis to do a “Za Warudo”.
  • The “I’m a bandit” joke is explained a bit more.
  • Claude acts extra cute in “The Prince, the Princess and the Heir”
  • Claude asks what is your preference instead of your allegiance.
  • Your thoughts about the three class leaders are a bit more detailed.

Caro – フレスベルグの少女〜風花雪月〜 (Theme Song of Fire Emblem: Three Houses)

Title: フレスベルグの少女〜風花雪月〜 (The Young Girl of Hraesvelg ~Fuukasetsugestu~)
Vocals: キャロ (Caro)
Release Date: Jul 26, 2019

WARNING: Explanations of this song contain major spoilers for Fire Emblem: Three Houses.   I was gifted this game by my coworker and holy crap, this game played with my emotions in a way I would have never expected.  After finishing all possible routes of the game, I’m honestly shocked at how masterfully this game manages so much foreshadowing without giving it all away.  Do yourself a favor and don’t spoil this game if you haven’t played it yet.

Includeore – slushy poetry feat. 妖狐

Title: slushy poetry
Circle: 俺++ (Includeore)
Vocal: たま(tama), 妖狐 (youko)
Lyrics: 俺++
Arrangement: Coro
Release Date: Dec 29, 2012

One of the first songs I ever translated two years ago, I was stricken by how beautiful and sad it sounded.  I initially thought it was a sad breakup story, but now I think I completely misinterpreted it!  Songs in Japanese rarely use pronouns so it’s up to you to figure out the context of who’s talking to who.  Now that I have a better grasp of the language, I just had to redo the translation.  The song is actually about a boy and a girl who have been friends for a long time, but keep waiting for the other to confess.  Eventually, the girl has to move away and the final standoff (this song) occurs.  This has risen to become my favorite lyrical Touhou pieces of all time.

Vocal: めらみぽっぷ
Arrangement: kaztora
Lyrics: ticat
Release Date: Dec 30, 2017

It’s been a long time since I’ve done a translation, even though I’ve been taking Japanese classes the whole time.  Sometimes when you take a break from doing something and come back after lots of practice, you really get to see how much you’ve improved.  I heard this peppy cute song and instantly knew I had to share Eternity Larva’s motivational words with everyone.

“If there was a Japanese ship I could feel sorry for at all, it would be the Kumano.” – Fleet Admiral William Frederick Halsey Jr.

Kumano and Suzuya took part in Leyte Gulf, the biggest naval battle in history. While Suzuya was sunk there, Kumano managed to survive and began her retreat. She was beset by and survived 8 different attacks on her long and painful journey home before finally sinking on the 9th attack.

Final note: the romaji of the title is “Juubaku”. The main line of this song is “ai ni juubaku”, pronounced like “I need you back”, means “a gunblast for love”.

東方事変 – スーパースター

Album: 絶倫パトロール (Peerless Patrolwoman)

To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of the original Pandemonic Planet.  However, you can really throw out a lot of parts and make it into something incredible, such as this inspiring motivational song.  Touhou Jihen completely transformed the theme into something new and I’m a huge fan of it.  Also, that’s two songs translated now where Hecatia is bored.

This is the very first Touhou song I translated, which happened over a year ago. Coming back to your old work leaves one feeling uncomfortable with… I wonder if I’ll have the same feeling new year. As for the song, I knew that the song was fairly raunchy, but in my second passthrough I noticed a LOT more dirty language. Not sure how I feel about that but what can you expect from such a song?
