White Clouds Chapter
Constellation Moon
A Reason for Tears
Summary of changes:
- One of Manuela’s White Heron Cup lines was too naughty for English audiences.
- The Bernadetta fish lines are hard to translate.
- A very well setup Petra joke where she mistakens the ball for a fighting competition is almost impossible to translate.
- Localization avoided deciding what word to call a group of Demonic Beasts.
- Jeralt was already onto the idea that the Demonic Beasts were the students.
- Monika’s persona is just a cutesy schoolgirl and is not as intensely degrading towards Jeralt.
- Jeralt calls your tears a parting gift, which is why he thanks you.
- Sothis is much more supportive of the idea that Jeralt’s death was not fate.
- Byleth explicitly swears to take revenge by killing Jeralt’s killer.
- Jeralt describes Rhea’s condition as panic when hearing baby Byleth was dead.
- The second response to Alois in Jeralt’s room was changed drastically.
- There is a negative connotation in Sothis’ relation to Byleth.
Previous: Chapter 8 (Black Eagles) | Next: Chapter 10 (Black Eagles)
Opening
- The constellations twinkle in the clear winter sky. The Blue Sea Star hides itself,
- meaning the Goddess prays for peace on earth from heaven faraway.[1]In chapter 4, it is mentioned that the Blue Sea Star is where the Goddess is believed to reside.
- At Garreg Mach Monastery, celebrations for the anniversary of its completion are also performed this year
- and people’s prayers for the Millennium festival in five years begin to grow in size.
- Though most stars will still glimmer in the crisp winter air, the blue sea star has gone back into hiding.
- Legend states that the goddess prays for peace from her home in the heavens.
- In the town of Garreg Mach, the anniversary of the monastery’s completion nears,
- and the people’s prayers intensify ahead of the millennium festival, still five years hence.
(The Ruined Chapel)
- Rhea: A ball has been scheduled for this moon. I’m sure the students are looking forward to it.
- Seteth: However, I would be worried if we did nothing but mess around. For your task this moon, I will have you tackle something as usual.
- Seteth: That task is… there have been traces of someone trespassing an unused chapel.
- > 「A chapel?」
Rhea: It was a building we once used temporarily as a church when the monastery was under repair. - > 「Was something stolen?」
Rhea: No, it’s a building with nothing valuable inside. The trespassers’ objectives are unknown. - Seteth: Thus, the task for your class this moon will be to watch over the chapel and investigate the intruders.
- As we live in an unsettling time with such circumstances surrounding the church, we cannot overlook even the slightest abnormalities.
- Rhea: To ensure the safety of the students, I have even ordered an esteemed member of the Knights to support you, just in case.
- > 「That’s reassuring」
> 「Who could that be?」
Jeralt: Esteemed member of the Knights, Jeralt Eisner reporting for duty. - Rhea: Why don’t take of this rare opportunity to have a proper chat with your child, Jeralt?
- Jeralt: Haha… I appreciate the consideration.
- Seteth: Even so, Jeralt-san also has other duties.
- Seteth: Once he has sorted them out, we plan for him to come back and assist you.
- Jeralt: I’ll be gone from the monastery a while because of that, but when I come back…
- Byleth, I’ll be taking a proper look at the way you work, okay?
- Rhea: We are planning a grand ball for this month. I am sure the students will be most pleased.
- Seteth: Yes, certainly. However, we must not devote all of our time to frivolity. We have a new mission for you.
- Seteth: We have found evidence of someone sneaking into an unused chapel.
- > 「A chapel?」
Rhea: It is a building that was once a temporary sanctuary at a time when the monastery was under renovation. - > 「Was something stolen?」
Rhea: No, there is nothing of value in that building. We do not yet know what the intruders’ objectives are. - Seteth: This month, your class is tasked with guarding the chapel and investigating these intruders.
- With the recent state of affairs surrounding the holy church, we cannot afford to overlook any abnormality, no matter how seemingly trivial.
- Rhea: I am ordering a seasoned knight to assist you to ensure the safety of the students. In times like these, I am afraid we must always expect the worst.
- > 「That’s reassuring.」
> 「Which knight?」
Jeralt: Reporting for duty, Lady Rhea. - Rhea: I thought you two could use the time to bond. And to speak of important matters…
- Jeralt: Appreciate the thought.
- Seteth: Bear in mind that Jeralt has a separate mission of his own.
- Seteth: He will join you once he has finished it.
- Jeralt: It’s true. I’ll be away from the monastery for a while. But when I return…
- I’ll come and watch you work. I’ll be looking forward to it.

- This is the class dance competition, the “White Heron Cup”!!
- Your judge are, me! The humble Alois Rangeld!
- A former songstress at the Mittelfrank Opera Company, Manuela Casagranda!
- Manuela: It’s a pleasure. It should go without saying, but I won’t be showing any favoritism to my own class, okay?
- Alois: And finally, the grand assassin who dances in darkness, Shamir Nevrand!!
- Shamir: …
- Alois: Us aforementioned three will judge fairly and impartially!
- And with that, each class representative, please take the stage!
- Alois: Now then, the three of you! And the orchestra! Is everyone ready?
- Alois: In that case… If you please!!
- Alois: Fin~ished~!!
- The three of you danced spectacularly!!
- With that, let’s go immediately into judging.
- Manuela: I think I’ll go with…
- The ○○ House.
- My heart was beating fast from how sexy it was.
- It was very beautiful artistically.
- I was surprised by the originality.
- With polish, I think you could shine.
- Shamir: For me, it’s…
- The ○○ House.
- It was more personal than everyone else’s.
- I felt the way you moved your body was something remarkable.
- Clean movements are a big deal.
- I can’t really explain why, though.
- Alois: I see! On top of that, I, Alois, shall add my judgement… Yes, it is decided!
- And so, I shall announce the decision! The winner of this year’s “White Heron Cup”…
- The ○○ House!!
- Alois: And with that, let’s take a moment to give a big round of to our participating students!

- And also… The acclaimed former songstress of the Mittelfrank Opera Company, Manuela Casagranda!
- Manuela: Yes, yes, thank you. Oh, and it should go without saying, but I swear to show no bias to my own house. Got it? Good.
- Alois: Last but not least, the glamorous assassin who does all of her dancing in the dead of night…Shamir Nevrand!
- Shamir: Hmph.
- Alois: The three of us swear on our honor to judge the following proceedings with utmost impartiality and fairness!
- And with that, will the representatives of each house please make their way to the stage!
- Alois: Contestants! Are you ready to dance? And is the band prepared to play?
- Alois: Very well… BEGIN!
- Alois: TIME! That’s all, folks!
- Splendid! All three of you were fantastic!
- Now, let’s hear what the judges have to say…
- Manuela: Oh my, let’s see. I suppose I have no choice but to vote for…
- The ○○ House.
- Your performance was…exhilarating. My heart is still beating a mile a minute.
- Your performance was artistic. Beautiful even.
- I must say I was surprised by your…inventive style.
- Keep practicing and you could really shine out there.
- Shamir: I vote for…
- The ○○ House.
- You were most original.
- Can’t say why.
- Decisive movements. Nothing wasted.
- The way you carried yourself was striking.
- Alois: Great feedback, both of you! Well then, let’s see… Factoring my own humble opinion… Yes! We have a winner!
- And I will announce who it is…right now! Without any delay! The winner of this year’s White Heron Cup is…
- The ○○ House!
- Alois: Once more, please give a big round of applause for our talented participants!
(The Night of the Oath)
- Edelgard: The ball is tomorrow. I don’t have good memories of the ball, but…this time I’m looking forward to it.
- Hubert: Honestly for me, the ball is synonymous with crushing the men who swarm around Lady Edelgard.
- Ferdinand: Naturally, Edelgard is a sweet young lady after all.
But when it comes to the magnificence of dance, me losing would also be… - Dorothea: Feru-kun, your talent for dance isn’t bad, but there are some things you do that are hard to look at directly.
- Ferdinand: For you to praise me for being so dazzling that I can’t be looked at directly is an honor.
- Lindhart: I’m a bit jealous of that pure optimism of yours. …Since I can dance theoretically, maybe I should participate.
- Bernadetta: I can’t do it! If someone like me were to dance at the ball, I’d definitely look just like a fish swimming in a forest!
- Caspar: Gahaha! Your mouth definitely flaps like a fish sometimes!
- Bernadetta: Gyaaa! Why would you say something like that! In the end, I’m just a fish on a griddle![2]The griddle mentioned is actually a “teppan”, a large flat iron cooking plate.
This line is a joke that Bernadetta feels like she’s being tortured or punished. - Lindhart: A griddle… Kufufu… Uh, nevermind.
- Caspar: …Speaking of which, do we get to pick our dance partner? I wonder who I should invite.
- Hubert: Blunt way to change the topic. If Lady Edelgard desires, I…
- Petra: I will, do my best, at the bout! Tonight, I will carefully, care for my weapons.[3]The pronunciation for ball is butoukai (舞踏会). Petra interprets this as 武闘会, which means “Fighting Competition”.
- Dorothea: Petra-chan, wait. I hope we’re not misunderstanding something…
- Petra: Yes, it’s fine. I will, choose a partner. With magnificence, I will crush them.[4]Actually a great joke setup. Partner in Japanese, 相手 actually means “the other party” and can refer to an ally or an opponent in a match.
Earlier, Caspar talked about “partners”, which Petra mistook for opponents. This was made worse by Hubert talking about “crushing” men and Ferdinand talking about “magnificence”. - Dorothea: This is definitely Hyu-kun’s[5]Short for Hubert. fault…
- Edelgard: …Incidentally, I have a proposition for everyone. Five years from today, can we all gather again at the monastery?
- Caspar: Like a class reunion? That’d be great!
- Hubert: Five years later will be the Millennium Festival of Garreg Mach.
- I heard they plan to hold a festival unlike any other in history during then.
- Dorothea: That sounds exciting. Well, I think it’ll be a good excuse to come meet our Teacher.
- Petra: I will show you the me that has grown up. Teacher will be pleased. We shake hands. It is good!
- Edelgard: I don’t know what will happen to everyone in five years. But, I have faith.
- Faith that everyone who faces forward will gather here and celebrate our reunion.
- Lindhart: My worry is whether Teacher will still be working here in 5 years.
- Edelgard: Fufu, they don’t need to continue working here. Master, you’ll come too, won’t you?
- > 「Of course」
> 「Maybe」
Edelgard: Don’t forget, Master. - Even in the unlikely event that the Millenium Festival gets canceled, I will definitely still return here.
- Edelgard: The ball is tomorrow. I have no worthwhile memories of such events, yet I’m still looking forward to this one.
- Hubert: As am I, in the sense that I look forward to destroying all of the unworthy suitors who will inevitably swarm Lady Edelgard.
- Ferdinand: I will admit, Edelgard is adorable. However, when it comes to elegance on the dance floor, I am superior!
- Dorothea: You’re not a bad dancer, Ferdie. But you do have some moves that are…hard to watch.
- Ferdinand: You honor me with your kind words! I understand that I am sometimes too dazzling to behold directly.
- Lindhart: I’m envious of your positive attitude. I also know how to dance…in theory. Maybe I should participate as well.
- Bernadetta: Not me! You wouldn’t catch me dancing at a ball any sooner than you’d catch a fish swimming through the sky!
- Caspar: You do tend to flop around like a fish on the land, after all.
- Bernadetta: Wh-why would you say that?! Now I feel like a fish on a skillet…
- Lindhart: On a skillet… Hahaha! Ahem, never mind.
- Caspar: Speaking of the ball, do we get to pick who we dance with? I wonder who I should ask…
- Hubert: A bold subject change. Should Lady Edelgard wish it, I would be honored to…
- Petra: I will fight with all that I have in me!
- Dorothea: Fighting? No, that’s not really the point…
- Petra: I will not be as a fish upon the flame!
- Dorothea: Um… OK…
- Edelgard: I have a proposition. Let’s all agree to meet back at the monastery exactly five years from today.
- Caspar: Like a class reunion? That’s a great idea!
- Hubert: Five years from today will be the millennium festival for Garreg Mach Monastery.
- I’ve heard the magnitude of the festivities will exceed all prior years.
- Dorothea: Ooh, how exciting! Sounds like a great excuse to come visit our dear professor.
- Petra: You will be seeing how much growing I have done. You will be pleased, Professor. This idea is good!
- Edelgard: Who knows where each of us will be in five years’ time…or who we will become.
- Still, I have faith that all of us will gather and celebrate our reunion.
- Lindhart: That’s assuming the professor is still here in five years…and not enjoying a cozy early retirement.
- Edelgard: Even if that’s the case, you will come, won’t you? Whether or not you’re still teaching here…
- > 「Of course.」
> 「I will try.」
Edelgard: Don’t forget, my teacher. - Even if the millennium festival should be canceled, I promise to return here…
(The Tower of the Goddess)
- Sothis: What’s this, are you running away?
- Well, you have been bumped around by the crowd a lot, after all.
- It must be tough being such a popular teacher. Ho ho ho.
- > 「I’m not that popular…」
Sothis: Were there not students appearing one after the other, all wanting to dance with you? Good grief. - > 「It’s tough」
Sothis: So you don’t deny that you are popular. As I expected of you. - Sothis: …And where do you plan to run off to? Wherever you go in the monastery, merry students are…
- I see, you mean the Tower of the Goddess.
- Sothis: Running away?
- I understand. You hardly had the time to breathe in there.
- It must be hard to be the favourite teacher at the ball! Poor, poor Professor!
- > 「I am not everyone’s favorite…」
Sothis: Was that a joke? I find it hard to tell with you. Just think of all the students begging you to dance! - > 「It is difficult.」
Sothis: So you do think you’re the favorite! I might have known. - Sothis: But where is there to run? This place is filled with joyful students looking for a dance.
- Ah… I see. The Goddess Tower waits for you…
(Rhea and Sothis)
- Sothis: Everyone looks like they’re having fun. Are you not dancing anymore?
- > 「I’m tired」
> 「I’ll just watch」
Sothis: Is that so… How boring. Whereas if I had a body, I would sing and dance until I hit my limit. - Oh, there’s a lovely person over there also just watching like you.
- Rhea: …
- Sothis: Hmm, I’m bored. Shall we chase after her?
- > 「Why?」
> 「Not my business」
Sothis: Don’t worry about it, hurry up and go! - Didn’t you also say you were curious about that person’s true intentions?
- Mm, I think I can faintly hear a song… I wonder if it’s coming from over there.
- Rhea: In the flow of time… A flame is lit… It flickers on the river’s surface… A fragment of memories…
- Sothis: This song… I remember hearing it before…
- No, it’s not that I heard it… I’ve sang it to someone…?
- This is… A song that I made… No, there’s no way something like that could be…
- Even if that were the case, why does that person know it… It couldn’t be…
- …What a pity, I am suddenly drowsy… What’s that, you are too? Quickly, to bed then…
- Sothis: It seems that everyone is having a delightful time. Will you not dance some more?
- > 「I’m tired.」
> 「I’d rather not.」
Sothis: How dull of you! Had I a body of my own… Oh, I would sing and dance until I fell upon the ground! But you… Hmph. Do you as will. - Ah, you’re not the only one who feels that way. Look over there.
- Rhea: …
- Sothis: Hmph. I’m bored beyond compare. Will you not follow her?
- > 「Why would I?」
> 「I have no reason to.」
Sothis: Oh, come on! Hurry up! - I know that you are curious to see what she is up to…
- I hear…someone singing. From other there…
- Rhea: In time’s flow…see the glow of flames ever burning bright… On the swift river’s drift, broken memories alight…
- Sothis: That song… I feel I have heard it in the past…
- Actually… It is not that I have heard it. I… Did I once sing that song to someone?
- No. There’s more. I wrote this song… Oh, but how could that be so?
- If that were true, then how could she be singing it? Unless…
- No, no. I am suddenly so exhausted… As are you, no doubt? Quickly then. To bed with you.
(Emergency Report)
- Alois: Captain, where are you?! Byleth, have you seen the captain?
- Alois: You’ll have to do, if you’re the only one around…
- Jeralt: I’m back, Byleth. My bad, got caught up in the previous mission.
- Alois: Oh, Captain! Big trouble! We’ve been informed that a pack of demonic beasts has been sighted near the chapel…!
- Jeralt: What nonsense is that? I haven’t received any report that the castle walls have been breached.
- Alois: That’s why I’m hurrying over to confirm it! You’re coming too, right Captain?!
- Jeralt: Of course I am. The chapel is the place where the kid and I were ordered to watch over.
- > 「Where did they come from?」
> 「A pack of demonic beasts?」
Alois: It’s strange… People saw several students heading towards the chapel right before. - They appeared to be acting weird, so they might not have been in their right minds.
- Then, after that, they said Demonic Beasts came crawling out one after the other.
- > 「The students were eaten?」
> 「The students were killed?」
Jeralt: …There’s no way Demonic Beasts should have been able to break in. Perhaps… - Well, we need action right now more than thinking. You, summon the kids from your class immediately.
- Jeralt: …Damn, I had something I had to talk to you about, but we’ve got no time to settle down.
- Well, it’s not the subject was particularly urgent. I’ll go on ahead!
- Alois: Captain? Captain! Where are you? Hey, Professor. Have you seen your old man?
- Alois: Too bad. I guess it will have to be you, then…
- Jeralt: I’m back. Sorry for the delay, my last mission took longer than expected.
- Alois: Captain! Thank goodness you’re here. There are reports of Demonic Beasts near the chapel!
- Jeralt: Nonsense. I haven’t heard anything about the monastery’s walls being breached.
- Alois: That’s why I’m heading there now, to see what’s really going on. You’ll join as well, won’t you?
- Jeralt: Of course. We’re both sworn to protect this place.
- > 「Where did they come from?」
> 「Demonic Beasts?」
Alois: It’s odd. Just before they appeared, someone saw a number of students heading toward the chapel. - They were apparently acting strange, as though they weren’t in their right minds.
- Shortly after, Demonic Beasts started to appear, one after the other.
- > 「Are the students safe?」
> 「Were the students killed?」
Jeralt: Hm… The students… There’s no way those Demonic Beasts got in from the outside… - But none of that matters right now. We need to act. Go summon your students.
- Jeralt: Damn it… I wanted to talk to you about something important, but there’s no time. There’s never any damn time.
- But this is much more urgent, so it can hold for now. I’ll meet you there.
(Former Chapel Rescue Battle)

- > Battle Start
- Jeralt: Those are certainly demonic beasts alright… I think there’s no doubt they came from the chapel.
- I’ll head for the chapel! You guys protect the students who couldn’t get away!
- Student(SW): H-help me! The, the demonic beast is…!
- Student(NW): Kyaaaa! Someone please come!
- Student(NE): Damned Demonic beasts……!D-don’t come any closer!
- > Ally Phase 1
- Jeralt: That demonic beast… There’s a stone-like thing in its forehead…
- Monika: …
- > First Demonic Beast Defeated
- Student: …
- Jeralt: As I suspected, so the demonic beasts are actually students? But why would they do something like this…?
- > Protected SW Student
- Student: Thank you very much! I wonder if my friends who couldn’t escape are okay…?
- > Protected NW Student
- Student: That was so scary… I’m eternally grateful…!
- > Protected NE Student
- Student: Sorry. That was dangerous…
- > Byleth⇔Jeralt
- Jeralt: Can you still keep going? Don’t overdo it.
- I thought this back at Remire too, but you’ve gotten pretty good at commanding.
- Maybe I shoulda had you command me. Hahaha!
- > Battle Victory
- Student: Haa… I’m saved… Th-thank you very much!
- Jeralt: Tch… Not a trace of anything in the chapel, huh…?
- Still, I don’t believe this is unrelated to Remire. It’s probably those guys…
- Monika: Please waaiit!
- Jeralt: Huh…? Another student who still hasn’t escaped?
- > Battle Start
- Jeralt: There really are Demonic Beasts here… They’re emerging from the chapel!
- I’ll head that way. The rest of you, protect the students who weren’t able to get away.
- Student(SW): Help me! These beasts… They’re…
- Student(NW): Argh! Somebody help me!
- Student(NE): You stupid beasts! Don’t you dare come over here!
- > Ally Phase 1
- Jeralt: That beast… There’s a stone or something on its forehead…
- Monika: …
- > First Demonic Beast Defeated
- Student: …
- Jeralt: The Demonic Beasts were actually students? How can this be…
- > Protected SW Student
- Student: Thank you! But my friends who couldn’t get away… Are they OK?
- > Protected NW Student
- Student: I was so scared… I’ll find a way to repay you, I promise!
- > Protected NE Student
- Student: Sorry. That was a close one…
- > Byleth⇔Jeralt
- Jeralt: Do you really think you can keep going? Don’t push yourself too hard.
- Thinking about what happened in Remire village, it’s clear you’ve gotten the hang of being a leader.
- Maybe you should have taken command of me too!
- > Battle Victory
- Student: Phew… You saved me. Thank you!
- Jeralt: There isn’t a trace of evidence to be found in the chapel.
- This must have been something to do with Remire. Perhaps…
- Monika: Wait!
- Jeralt: Huh? Another student?
(A Fated Death)
- Jeralt: …Hurry on back.
- Monika: Okaaay.
- You’re so annoying, old man.
- This is what happens when you get in the way of my brilliant plan…
- Jeralt: …Hurry on back.
- Monika: Okaaay.
- Why are you here?!
- Thales: There is still…
- a role that you need to fulfill.
- Jeralt: Sorry…
- Doesn’t look like we get to stay together any longer.
- That you’d give the first tears I’ve seen you cry
- to me as a parting gift.
- I’m somewhat happy, yet somewhat sad…
- …Thank… you…
- Jeralt: Run along now.
- Monika: Thanks for all your help, sir.
- You’re just a pathetic old man.
- How dare you get in the way of my brilliant plan…you dog.
- Jeralt: Run along now.
- Monika: Thanks for all your help, sir.
- Huh? What are you doing here?
- Thales: You must survive.
- Merely because there is a role that I require you to fulfill.
- Jeralt: Sorry.
- It looks like…I’m going to have to leave you now.
- To think that the first time I saw you cry…
- your tears would be for me.
- It’s sad, and yet…I’m happy for it.
- Thank you…kid.
(Father’s Diary)
- Sothis: …So, this is Jeralt’s room?
- Are you still crying…?
- If you couldn’t save him even with the power to rewind time, there’s nothing you can do but accept his fate.
- > 「It wasn’t anything like fate」
Sothis: That may be true… Jeralt’s fate was twisted at the hands of those evildoers. - > 「I will avenge him no matter what[6]Specifically, avenging by killing the killer.」
Sothis: Mhm… We cannot allow these evildoers to remain at large. - Sothis: …Right! The thing that Jeralt told you to search for, isn’t it behind that shelf?
- This… looks like Jeralt’s diary. Contrary to his appearance, he writes his characters very small and neatly.
- Look, I think this is before you were born. There’s a good amount written before then.
- …Hmm? Read this. Year 1159, Hornbow Moon──
- Jeralt: Hornbow Moon, Day 20, cloudy. I still don’t think I’ve realized that she’s dead.
- Lady Rhea said she lost her life the moment she gave birth to the child, but is that really what happened?
- And the child that so she traded her own life for doesn’t even attempt to cry.
- Hornbow Moon, Day 25, rain. As always, the baby never smiles nor cries.
- Lady Rhea said not to worry, but a child that doesn’t cry isn’t normal, right?
- When I had him examined by a doctor in secret, they said the pulse was normal but couldn’t hear a heartbeat!
- Flying Dragon Moon, Day 2, sunny. I think I’m going to leave this place with the baby.
- However, the church is monitoring the baby. I don’t know what Lady Rhea is planning.
- I used to think Lady Rhea was so wonderful, but now I’m terrified.
- Flying Dragon Moon, Day 7, rain. I decided to take advantage of yesterday’s fire and pretended the baby died.
- Rhea is so panicked it’s abnormal. But, there’s no going back. I gotta take the kid with me…
- Sothis: So the baby was you? Assuming it was… hmm? Looks like someone’s coming.
- Alois: …I thought you’d be here.
- I never thought Mr. Jeralt… That my captain would end up like this…
- That man, you were more important than anything else to him.
- > 「Was that so…?」
> 「He didn’t express that…」
Alois: It’s because he was an awkward guy. I’m sure it was embarrassing for him to directly convey his feelings to you. - Since it’s come to this, I, Alois, promise to protect you in Captain’s place from now on!
- …Sorry. This isn’t the time for things like a long conversation.
- Lady Rhea is calling for you, so I came to tell you that. Well, see you later…
- Sothis: …You can read the diary anytime if you come here. Let’s take our time to read the rest later.
- Sothis: But… I see. There is one thing I know for certain.
- That which we share together… I fear it’s likely that…
- Sothis: So this is where your father lived…
- Hm? Are you still crying?
- If turning back the hands of time was not enough to save his life, you must accept what came to pass was fate.
- > 「It wasn’t fate.」
Sothis: Control yourself. Though Jeralt’s death was at the hands of wicked ones, a fate is still a fate. - > 「Our enemies will pay.」
Sothis: Agreed. We cannot let the wicked ones run free. - Sothis: Oh! Your father said to look for something here. He must be referring to whatever is behind that bookcase there…
- Your father’s diary… Huh, his handwriting is prettier than his face would suggest.
- Well, well! These entries here are from before your birth. He seems to have been writing this for quite some time.
- Hm? Ah… Read that part there. Horsebow Moon, Year 1159…
- Day 20 of the Horsebow Moon. All is cloudy. I can’t believe she’s dead.
- Lady Rhea said she died during childbirth. But is that the truth?
- And still, the child she traded her life for doesn’t make a sound. Didn’t even cry at birth.
- Day 25 of the Horsebow Moon. It’s raining. The baby doesn’t laugh or cry. Not ever.
- Lady Rhea says not to worry, but a baby that doesn’t cry…isn’t natural.
- Had a doctor examine the child in secret. He said the pulse is normal, but there’s no heartbeat. No heartbeat!
- Day 2 of the Wyvern Moon. Sunny. I feel I must take the child and leave.
- But the church is always watching us… I don’t know what Lady Rhea has planned.
- I used to think the world of Lady Rhea. Now I’m terrified of her.
- Day 8 of the Wyvern Moon. More rain. I used the fire that broke out last night to fake the child’s death.
- Lady Rhea is in a state over the news. But I can’t change what I’ve done. I’ve got to take the child and leave…
- Sothis: Well now! That baby must be you! That means… Hm? Someone is approaching us.
- Alois: Ah… Here you are.
- To think that Captain… that Jeralt would meet his end like that.
- I hope you know that you were the most important thing in the world to him.
- > 「I was?」
> 「What do you want?」
Alois: He wasn’t the most emotional guy. I’m sure expressing his affection wouldn’t have come naturally to him. - After what’s happened, it’s up to me now. I, Alois, swear to protect you in the captain’s stead.
- Sorry. This isn’t the time for my blathering.
- Lady Rhea is looking for you. I came to tell you that. I’ll take my leave now.
- Sothis: This book is filled with secrets yet unknown. We must return another time to read the rest.
- Sothis: Oh, but I have at least figured one thing out.
- I know now why our fates are intertwined…
(Report – Constellation Moon)

- Rhea: I too cannot bear the grief of having lost such a proud knight.
- To me, Jeralt was… Not just a comrade of many years, but also a friend.
- 《No Rhea Support》
> 「Many years?」
> 「When did you meet?」
Rhea: Let’s just say… it was a very long time ago. At the time, Jeralt was a solder of the Kingdom. - Our first encounter was actually me saving him when he was on the brink of death, wounded on the battlefield.
- After that, as a member of the Knights of Seiros, he devoted himself to serving the church.
- > 「Why did he quit the knights?」
- Rhea: He… met one of the nuns at the monastery, and before long the two fell in love.
- But in exchange for the birth of his child, the nun ended up losing her life.
- She weighed the options of her life and the child’s, then entrusted me to save the life of the child…
- Having never accepted that, he took the child… took you and suddenly left.
- 《Rhea C Support or Above》
> 「But you hadn’t been seeing each other much」
Rhea: He… met one of the nuns at the monastery, and before long the two fell in love. - But in exchange for the birth of his child, the nun ended up losing her life.
- She weighed the options of her life and the child’s, then entrusted me to save the life of the child…
- Having never accepted that, he took the child… took you and suddenly left.
- > 「What kind of person was my mother?」
> 「Did I perhaps inherit my crest from my mother?」
Rhea: That’s… Your mother was… my… - Alois: Sorry to interrupt in the middle of your conversation. Lady Rhea, there’s something urgent I’d like to share.
- It’s a report from the knights assigned to the outskirts…
- Rhea: …Byleth, retire for today.
- For now, devote yourself to nothing except resting your body and calming your heart. Sound good?
- Rhea: Professor. I have been waiting for you. I am filled with grief at the loss of our most celebrated knight.
- Jeralt was an ally of many years…and also a dear friend.
- 《No Rhea Support》
> 「Many years?」
> 「When did you meet?」
Rhea: It was a long while back. At the time, Jeralt was a soldier of the Kingdom. - He was injured in battle, and I saved him just as he was about to perish. That was our first meeting.
- After that, he became a Knight of Seiros. He gave his all to the service of the church.
- > 「Why did he leave the knights?」
- Rhea: He…fell in love with one of the nuns here at Garreg Mach.
- Their love produced a child…whom she died giving birth to.
- It was her decision. She weighed her own life against that of her child’s and, in the end, implored me to save the child.
- Your father…never truly accepted that decision. He took the child–took you–and disappeared without warning.
- 《Rhea C Support or Above》
> 「But it had been so long since you last saw him…」
Rhea: He…fell in love with one of the nuns here at Garreg Mach. - Their love produced a child…whom she died giving birth to.
- It was her decision. She weighed her own life against that of her child’s and, in the end, implored me to save the child.
- Your father…never truly accepted that decision. He took the child–took you–and disappeared without warning.
- > 「Who was my mother?」
> 「Did I inherit my Crest from my mother?」
Rhea: Your mother…she was my… - Alois: Sorry for the interruption, Lady Rhea. There’s something you must hear immediately.
- A report from the knights patrolling the area…
- Rhea: Very well. Professor, you are dismissed for the day.
- Please rest and focus only on mending your heart. Understood?
Notes
↑1 | In chapter 4, it is mentioned that the Blue Sea Star is where the Goddess is believed to reside. |
---|---|
↑2 | The griddle mentioned is actually a “teppan”, a large flat iron cooking plate. This line is a joke that Bernadetta feels like she’s being tortured or punished. |
↑3 | The pronunciation for ball is butoukai (舞踏会). Petra interprets this as 武闘会, which means “Fighting Competition”. |
↑4 | Actually a great joke setup. |
↑5 | Short for Hubert. |
↑6 | Specifically, avenging by killing the killer. |
