An old way to say dragonfly is 蜻蛉 “Akitsu”. This is not officially the Akitsu in Akitsumaru, but Tom makes it seem appropriate. The song is about Akitsumaru’s final raid and sinking as she reminiscences about childhood songs. En route to the Phillipines on November 1944, Akitsumaru is sunk by USS Queenfish’s torpedoes striking her depth charges. Over the next 24 hours, 310 of Akitsumaru’s 2,300 men are saved by the other ships in her convoy. Coincidentally, rescuing survivors is also known as dragonfly fishing in Japanese.
